Pencil drawing has always been Doug's main medium. Drawing is the foundation of any visual artist's work. Drawing is writing without words. It is a non-verbal form of communication. If you are a young artist and you think that you do not need to have well developed drawing skills you need to know that you are wrong. You must change your mind and start your life-long enterprise of developing your drawing skills. Not having drawing skills is likened to a writer not knowing how to spell and not knowing how to use correct grammer. All of Doug's serious portraits and other art pieces began as clay pencil sketches. When Doug teaches his drawing students he makes a major point to them that they are not so much learning how to draw; they are actually learning how to see. That is SEE in capital letters. One must really SEE what is being drawn. SEE the light and dark shapes and proportions. SEE negative shapes as well as positive shapes. One doesn't just look at their subject, they SEE it. The images in this "pencil portrait" category are created on less than life size formats. They are typically done on 11"x 14" bristol board.
