All of the examples in this website category have been created using the the wax based prismacolor pigment medium. The images that appear on a white background are created on bristol board and those that have full backgrounds are created on Mi-Teintes Canson paper.

Doug works with the transparent method of laying down the color on the white bristol board. He works with the opaque method when working on the colored canson paper.

In the transparent application, the final colors are achieved by gentle layers of four or more colors laid down on top of one another.

In the opaque application, the final colors are achieved by building heavy amounts of wax pigment into the paper in a way that is akin to working with opaque paints. Since the pencils have such small points of application it is like working with paint in miniature.

The thing that Doug appreciates about working with the color pencils is that it is closely related to his first love of drawing with clay based pencils. In any case, he believes that the results that he is able to achieve are satisfying to look at. The colors in the shadow areas, have what he calls a lively look instead of a dead look that happens when one creates their final colors with just one color that a factory made.
